Thomas comes across as gorgeous, flippant and, at times, arrogant, though there is often a certain sarcastic edge to his comments about himself (“I swear to you by my stunning good lucks and my towering ego…”). He appears both unflappable and whimsical, both insanely charming (a lot of that is due to his supernatural nature, no doubt) and careless when it comes to handing out or receiving snide remarks and snarkiness. He has created a façade that shows him as little more than a penis with a body attached (his words, not mine! see Blood Rites), a guy who is ruled by his senses/instincts and has no clue about what’s going on when it comes down to vampire politics or the larger picture of things in general. The House Raith, however, is known for being manipulative and that’s what Thomas does as well – he manipulates those around him to think of him as harmless in order to protect himself and those he cares about from his father’s wrath (all his brothers before him have died under suspicious circumstances). In reality, he’s very intelligent and can piece the larger picture together and act accordingly without needing anyone’s help to do it (as proven in White Night, where he figures out the connection between the killings, finds a way to signal his brother about it without alerting anyone and proceeds to protect the women in danger). Thomas is very loyal to and protective of those he cares about – though of course, it would be too easy for him to just come right out and say it, wouldn’t it? So he’s being sneaky and manipulative about that, too. You might not realise he’s actually protecting you. Unlike anyone else in the vampiric side of the family, Thomas feels remorse over feeding on his victims, at least when he kills them. He doesn’t have any moral objections to using his abilities and putting a “mind whammy”on humans, though, especially not when he’s trying to protect them. The Hunger, the demon making Thomas what he is (that is, white court vampire) holds a certain amount of power over him and Thomas continually struggles against his demonic nature, as is shown when Harry soulgazes him. |
